Weeks passed with the speed of a prison sentence.

She was beginning to realize that she had misjudged how badly she would take the breakup.

She had lost her appetite and her face had become sharp and drawn.

When the time came for her usual buzz cut, she decided on a nihilistic whim to shave clean to the scalp. But instead of looking edgy or cool, she just looked like she was in the middle of a brutal course of chemotherapy.

She was staying out of Dramsoc. She told herself it was because she was in her final year and needed to study. One day she had walked past the reception desk, just over the stairwell leading down to the LGs, and she heard Betty’s laugh, a filthy, goofy cackle, rising up from below, and suddenly she was lost in heady memories of curly red hair and soft freckly shoulders and teeth gently biting on her lower lip …

She had started sobbing and slumped on the desk with such force that the receptionist, a young Nigerian man with kind eyes, had run over to ask her if she needed help. Clearly he had thought that whatever was wrong with her was finally about to kill her.
